Year 3/4 Science
Trip to Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
My trip to Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
By Scott Thompson
On the 6th of March our class went to Sunderland Museum.
We went on the Metro then walked to the Museum, when we got there we got to put our pack lunches and our coats in a room. The first room we got to look at was like a Jungle; we were all amazed at the trees, the fish and most of all the Dinosaur footprints on the floor.
We went up the stairs and we saw a water feature we were aloud to put our hands into the water, in the pond there were fish everybody was a little scared of the big one, even the adults and Miss Hayden didn’t like the look of it. As we were still walking through we heard dinosaur noises but we weren’t scared because we new that it was only speakers. On the next floor was the History room we saw some crystals and a water ball with glass around it. We went over to the weather and we had to put our hand in to a metal box, it was freezing cold air, then warm air and boiling air we felt on our hands. In another room we looked in had stuffed animals in: lions, tigers, cheetahs and some others. We also saw a mammoth tooth it was huge, we saw a dead mouse and a bat that were also stuffed. In the Art gallery we so some beautiful pictures of people and we got to draw one of our favourites, I drew a statue of a woman with a beautiful with a peach and gold dress on.

Year 3/4 Sushi
As part of our geography project, we have been looking at how climate and relief affect a traditional diet. Sushi comes from Japan. Traditionally Japanese people eat a lot of fish, as they are surrounded by sea - just like us in the UK.
We were really careful to clean the work bench first - in Design Technology we have been learning about how to keep food safe. It is VERY important to stop bacteria getting on to our food - it can make us really ill.
We made our Sushi from mackerel, salmon and tuna.
Unfortunately, the instructions on the packet of sushi rice very confusing. However, we managed to make some delicious sushi. We decided to make some much more useful instructions in our Literacy lessons. We produced some fantastic pieces of writing - some of the pieces even got awards from Mrs Gofton! Look out for publication of these on the website. Maybe you could have a go at making sushi!
Year 3/4 Bread Tasting

Speaking and Listening
Year 3/4 have been practising our speaking and listening skills. We watched a debate from the House of Commons. We recreated the debating chamber in our classroom. We debated several issues, including:
This House believes school children should be banned from playing computer games.
This House believes school uniform should be phased out.
This House believes television should be banned.
We found it really difficult to argue for things we didn't believe in, but we managed to come up with some fantastic reasons.
We practised our speaking skills. We made some rules to help us:
1) Stand up straight.
2) Look at the people you are talking to.
3) Hold your hands still.
4) Be proud to use your voice!
We also made some rules to help us be a good listener.
1) Look at the person who is talking.
2) Sit still.
3) Think about what they are saying.
WaterAid
Year 3/4 have been thinking about water and how important it is to everyone for a healthy life. We were shocked to hear of the thousands don't ever have safe, clean water. We decided to raise some money for WaterAid, a charity that helps provide lasting supplies of clean water. We set a target of £15. This is enough to provide 1 person with a lasting supply of clean water, sanitation and hygene education. The bun sale was a huge success and we managed to raise £42.70 - enough to help over 3 people!
French Day
On Friday the 9th November Year 3/4 had a French Day. The day started with a French breakfast. Children were offered the chance to sample French breakfast foods. The children had to order their breakfast in French. We enjoyed practising our French words and think we improved lots! The classroom was decorated with red, white and blue balloons, the colours of the tricolore.
After lunch, we had some French party games and songs to learn some new words. We learnt about some French customs and geography. We then had a quiz with prizes. It was very exciting! Then at the end of the day Mrs Gofton judged the poster competition. For our homework we had to use our knowledge of information texts to design a poster encouraging people to visit France. There were some super entries. Scott Thompson was the winner, but everyone got a treat for entering.
