All about China

This week pupils have been finding out all about China and the Olympic games. On Monday we were very lucky to have Lip Lee, a Chinese artist in school working with different classes. Everyone enjoyed listening to chinese stories, finding out more about certain Chinese customs and having ago at a variety of chinese crafts. Year 1 made animal masks, Year 2 looked at and made Chinese Theatre masks, Year 3/4 did some chinese painting and Year 4/5 made some Chinese kites. Today Liz Humphrey came to work with three classes. She taught Year 2, Year 3/4 and Year 6 all about the Geography of China and looked at artefacts from China. We also learned how to count to 5, say Hello,my name is and Thank you. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities and learned alot more about China.

Year 2 visit to St Mary`s church, Heworth

We recently visited St Mary`s church. The vicar showed us around and told us lots of interesting information.
We looked at the beautiful robes that she wears for some services. They are called chasubles. She told us why there was an alter rail. We also looked at the lecturn, pulpit and fonts.

Visit to Comenius partner school - France

At the beginning of April 2008, Mrs McCartney, Mrs Douglas, Mrs Robson and Miss Hayden set off to France for a Comenius project meeting in Bordeaux, France. When we were there we met teachers from the other partner school - Netherlands and Turkey.
We took a dvd of dances our pupils had learned and performed along with a booklet of instructionas and music to give to our partners school. They had also prepared dances for us to learn.
It was an excellent opportunity to see the similarities and differences bewteen our schools as well as giving us an opportunity to exchange ideas and information about the different education systems. You might like to take a few minutes to look at the display of photos and aretfacts in our school hall.

Note to parents - Summer Term topic

In the first half of the Summer term Reception and Nursery children are learning about Mini-beasts. We are hoping to find some frog spawn and watch it hatch into tadpoles. Can anyone help find some? If we do get any we will be looking for a small fish tank to keep them in, so if anyone has got one we can borrow that would be great too. We'll look after it!

French lessons

Reception children have been learning French in the Spring Term. They have been learning to count to 20. learning colour names and names for family members. They have also been singing and responding to songs using actions to help reinforce the language. To celebrate their work they ended with a party, tasting French food which was very popular and not a scrap was wasted.

World book day

Reception children celebrated world book day by listening to German Fairy tales. They also learnt about some German traditions. They made paper chains to celebrate German unification, Shultutes- which are cones filled with sweets, toys and stationery, and given to children on their first day at school to sweeten the experience. They decorated gingerbread men and made the witch's house from Hansel and Gretel.
